“Is she Indian or is she Black?” – I’m so bored of Trump’s race-baiting

Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity during a heated exchange at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. Trump’s remarks, filled with insinuations about Harris’s heritage, have – correctly – ignited a firestorm of criticism.

During the convention, Trump claimed, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” This statement, aimed at undermining Harris’s identity, quickly went viral, prompting widespread condemnation.

Trump’s assertions were met with immediate pushback. Vice President Harris responded at a meeting of the historically Black sorority Sigma Gamma Rho in Houston, saying, “The American people deserve better. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us—they are an essential source of our strength.” Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent (because, shocker, someone can be both), has long embraced both aspects of her heritage and has been an active member of the Congressional Black Caucus since entering the Senate in 2017.

Trump’s remarks at the convention are not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of racial divisiveness. Throughout his political career, Trump has repeatedly attacked his opponents on the basis of race. From questioning Barack Obama’s birthplace to attacking the credentials of other non-white politicians, Trump has a history of using race as a tool to sow discord.

Congressman Ritchie Torres of New York summed up the sentiment on social media, stating, “Since when is Donald Trump, with his long and ugly history of racism, the arbiter of Blackness?”

The controversy has had a significant impact on Harris and her supporters. Many have rallied behind her, criticising Trump’s attempts to undermine her legitimacy. Tweets expressing outrage have flooded social media, with one user stating, “It’s completely wild for a white guy with racism issues to think he has the power to decide who’s black. Like shut up and sit down.”

Despite Trump’s continuous racist buffoonery, his comments have highlighted the strength and resilience of Harris’s supporters. As Fred Sweets, a contributing editor at The St. Louis American, noted, “He seemed to be denigrating her background. She knows who she is.” Harris’s background and identity have been a source of pride and inspiration for many, and attempts to question them have only strengthened her support base. Sorry Trump, but the hole you’re digging for yourself is only getting deeper.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the focus remains on the resilience of those targeted by such divisive rhetoric. Harris’s ability to navigate these attacks with grace and strength serves as a powerful example for her supporters and the broader community.

Trump’s remarks aren’t just about race; they’re yet another attempt to undermine a highly accomplished woman of colour. Let’s be clear, Kamala Harris has an impressive professional history: she’s the first Black and Asian-American vice president, with a long and robust legal background. She is more than qualified for her role, and these attempts to diminish her accomplishments just expose Trump’s deep-seated fear of female excellence. It’s time we recognise these tactics for what they are and give women of colour the respect they deserve.

The American people deserve leaders who understand that diversity is a source of strength, not division. As we move forward, I hope we continue to hold those who perpetuate harmful stereotypes accountable and continue to champion the values of respect and inclusivity.
